Luminy® PLA is 100% biobased

Made from responsibly sourced sugarcane

Reduce your product’s carbon footprint by 85% and beyond*

Luminy® PLA is a 100% biobased polymer, offering a plant-based alternative to conventional materials. With up to an 85% lower carbon footprint for virgin PLA compared to traditional plastics, and carbon neutrality or better for recycled-content grades, Luminy® PLA helps accelerate the shift to a low-carbon, sustainable future.

The sustainability of Luminy® PLA starts at its biobased material source. The sugarcane used in production absorbs carbon from the atmosphere, storing it as biogenic carbon within its biomass. This carbon then moves through the renewable bioplastics value chain into the final product. When incinerated, the biogenic carbon is simply released back.

Luminy® PLA is made from sugarcane, an annually renewable feedstock

Luminy® PLA is made from sugarcane, an annually renewable feedstock, reinforcing its status as a plant-based plastic. The production process begins with sustainably sourced sugarcane, which is harvested and processed to extract sugar. This sugar undergoes fermentation, producing lactic acid, the foundation of biobased plastics like Luminy® PLA.

Our whitepaper, Planting the Future with PLA, explores the role of bio-based materials in the shift toward renewable bioplastics. As demand for environmentally sustainable products grows, Luminy® PLA stands out as an innovative solution. Importantly, research confirms that the bioplastics market’s land use impact remains minimal, ensuring it does not compete with food production.

With its renewable origins and low environmental impact, Luminy® PLA is a sustainable, eco-friendly alternative to traditional plastics, contributing to a greener future.

Certifications

Luminy® PLA s certified 100% biobased according to EN16785 and USDA biopreferred program.

Unlike trees, for example, sugar cane used in the production of Luminy® PLA is an annually renewable crop. This means that the sugar cane harvest occurs every year, and new plants grow in the same land the following year.

Corbion, our lactic acid supplier, uses a code of conduct for all their cane sugar suppliers, as well as specific extensions directly relating to sugarcane farming in Thailand and Brazil. Verification procedures are in place to confirm that a supplier meets these requirements. These include tools such as self-assessment questionnaires, third-party verification and Bonsucro certification.
