What is the purpose of the job?
The main purpose of our Process Development Engineer will be to develop, from idea phase to basic engineering, novel processes to support new PLA-based products. In addition, you will be working on debottlenecking and reliability activities of our current asset in Thailand. You will be our main polymer technology expert and as such will contribute to knowledge development including intellectual property matters.
In this role you work closely with our colleagues in the R&D Global Technology team in Gorinchem and with the team in Thailand and you are willing to travel there when needed as well. Join our team and play a key role in shaping our processes and driving innovation!
What are your specific duties?
Translating the purpose results in the following specific job activities:
Process development
- You design new polymer and compound production processes from idea to basic engineering level.
- In close collaboration with the engineering team in Thailand, you tackle challenges in our existing polymer production plant plant, troubleshoot, and find preventive solutions for a safe, efficient and high yield process for PLA production.
- You take the lead in testing out new process technologies, moving from the lab to pilot and industrial scale.
- You share your expertise across different functional areas to keep the collaboration strong.
Knowledge transfer
- You capture information from projects and other activities and assure the availability and dissemination of the required knowledge.
- You signal patent opportunities and enable the full drafting process of patent applications.
- You translate operational needs into technical improvement plans and define the scope of the R&D efforts needed.
- You perform conceptual design studies for key innovation projects and maturing these designs through pilot trials and upscaling to FEED level design.
Technology owner
- You maintain the knowledge base and skills concerning relevant technologies.
- You assure availability and transfer of the required knowledge to relevant groups in the field of expertise.
- You scout for new technologies, make them applicable to the company.
What does your background and skillset look like?

Experience:
- Master’s in chemical engineering, plus several years of professional engineering experience in a polymer plant and/or in a polymer process team.
- Knowledge of polymer productions plants and polymer extrusion technologies.
- Significant practical experience on process safety and quality, able to contribute to process safety and quality activities (Root Cause analysis, HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA).
Knowledge & Skills:
- Experience in design of new processes related to polymer (compound) production, ideally from conceptual design to ready-to-operate.
- Proficiency in working with DCS interfaces and process analysis tools such as Excel and PI.
- Strong communication skills; fluent in English. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Thrives on working in a challenging environment.
